A perfect, unique location. A stunning lodge. But Why?

What is it about Craigengar that wows so many diverse groups? Guest feedback suggests it's the interior of the lodge itself, plus its away-from-it-all setting on the Pentland Hills encircled by fields of grazing sheep and cattle. Couple this with its 30 minute accessibility to the heart of Edinburgh and other enticing places and Craigengar's appeal broadens even more. Many of our guests hardly move from their luxurious home and peaceful surroundings during their all-too-brief escape to the countryside. They prefer to relax amongst friends, family or colleagues within this amazing house or enjoy the extensive decking with panoramic views. With 1800 acres of our hill farm waiting to be explored, the more intrepid can venture further on foot to the Covenanter's Grave, a great day out. Craigengar enjoys the same wonderful location shared by Midcrosswood. For nearly 16 years Midcrosswood wooed back self-catering guests entranced by the hills and open skies, the tranquillity and antics of our livestock viewed whilst breakfasting. It was as though they were in the Highlands, they'd say, yet a half hour drive would take them into the buzz of Edinburgh. When Midcrosswood became home to our son, the sadness of so many of our regular guests accelerated our desire to build something bigger and even better up on the hill for guests to enjoy in this designated Area of Great Landscape Value. And here it is! Craigengar Lodge.

The focus with this new house is on contemporary style, immediately apparent as you leave the shelter belt of trees behind and view for the first time the imposing grandeur of this timber clad house with its curved aluminium roof set in a field all to itself. Venture inside and you find not just a visually appealing spacious, open-plan layout but the kind of high spec. extras you would expect from a boutique hotel: individually designed bedrooms and bathrooms, wonderfully atmospheric mood lighting, a Sonos sound system, ipod docking station, eye-catching pottery and artworks, and so much more. This house shouts modernity but intrigue, too, with many special touches. Curved ceilings, some with an engaging sense of volume, soar upwards marrying in with crescent shaped windows at the gable ends. Huge picture windows maximise the inside-outside feel with balau hardwood decking running along the southern side of the house. All the Scandinavian windows and doors are, naturally, double and triple glazed as this house lives and breathes eco-friendly principles. The underfloor heating on both floors is powered by a ground source heat pump.

The living area will accommodate up to 16 guests with the option of either one long dining table or separated into 2 individual tables. Sofas... the sort you sink into ... are grouped around the focal point of the room, the multi-fuel stove. Oriental rugs and cappuccino sheepskins from the Isle of Skye soften the impact of hardwood oak floors. And our love of granite shows! A granite hearth and upstand at one end, and at the other extensive black granite work surfaces in the kitchen area which flows from the dining area almost seamlessly. Noisy, intrusive appliances are in the main banished to the far distant Utility Room. This frees up plenty of cupboard space in the kitchen area to stock everything you might need, except for the food, for wining and dining up to 18 people. ( though Craigengar has hosted wedding parties with many more )

What's in it for the kids>>>>

Outside they discover a nature playground with acres of farmland to wander, wild-life and animal antics to watch and enjoy. Crosswoodhill has cows, calves and sheep.

Watch the shepherd and his dogs at work in the close-by sheep pens. This is Agritourism at its most authentic.

Simple pleasures kick in: ball games in the field surrounding the house, a picnic up the hill, paddling in the burn, relaxing with a good book on the outside decking

Exclusive to Craigengar is a family basket swing, single swings and a climbing frame: lovely robust, safe, natural wooden play equipment offering a challenge for even the most adventurous and imaginative children. Watch this space!

And inside, the house is big enough for children to migrate to different parts of the house.

Lots of board and card games, jigsaws, a variety of toys and books for all ages.

With 7 DVD players ( bring your own DVDs) and 7 TVs dotted around the house for those who want them there's plenty of scope for selectiveness!

You benefit from the best value quote if your dates fit with our preferred option of Friday to Sunday /Monday morning stays, Monday to Friday morning stays, Friday to Friday or Monday to Monday stays. As a guide, booked in advance, our cheapest rental rates are for weekday stays between Monday to Friday. The most popular choice is 2 to 3 night weekends for up to 12 guests and these range from £1150 all-in low season to £2000 all-in during peak season for up to 12 guests. Craigengar can accommodate an absolute maximum of 6 extra guests, charged at £50 per “extra person” per stay.

Week-long stays for groups in Craigengar range between £1800 low season and £2900 at Hogmanay.
